Request for funds for the Construction of a Cow Shelter to protect abandoned Native Breeds

Sree Venkatakrishnan Gho Samrakshana Sala was established in the year 2020, with the primary objective of protecting and preserving indigenous cows.

We are a non-profit service organisation focused on saving cows from being slaughtered, preventing extinction of indigenous cow breeds and handing this treasure over to our next generation.

Our humble journey began in 2017, when we offered shelter to an abandoned little cow, at our home in Adambakkam, Chennai.

At present, we maintain more than 100 cattle of 14 breeds, including cows, bulls and calves.  These kind animals have become our family. Initially we had only 2 breeds of cattle, but added 12 more rare and different breeds facing extinction, over a period of time.

Following are some of the breeds in Sree Venkatakrishnan Gho Samrakshana Sala

Chakkarakutta

Sivagangai Kutta

Thanjavur Kutta

Chittor Kutta

Thurinjal (Tiruvannamalai)

Kangayam

All these are low milk yielding breeds and are often abandoned by owners.

Purpose of Sree Venkatakrishnan Gho Samrakshana Sala

·     Conserve and prevent extinction of Indian breeds of cattle, and handing this invaluable treasure to our next generations

·     Create awareness among urban population about the subtle differences between Bos Indicus (Indian breeds of cows) and cross-breed cows

·     Educate people on the benefits of Panchagavya, and promote the use of Cow produce based fertilizers and organic manure for farming

·     Educate farmers on importance of indigenous cow breeds, and help them in production of Panchagavya products, to maintain Cows in a sustainable manner

Purpose of Sree Venkatakrishnan Gho Samrakshana Sala

·     Promote the use of Cow produce based home care and personal care products

·     Conduct awareness programs for children, to help build natural bond with native cows

·     Promote ancient spiritual practices such as Gho Puja (worship of cow & calf) and
Rishabha Puja (worship of bull)

What started as a humble attempt to protect a single cow, has now expanded manifold and become a significant movement. The headcount in Sree Venkatakrishnan Gho Samrakshana Sala is growing steadily and we are excited about the little things that we did and continue doing.

Our present venue is susceptible to nature’s fury and inadequate to maintain the large populace of cattle. During monsoon, rain water seeps in, resulting in waterlogging, hampering free movement of the cows and triggering diseases. So, we have recently started the construction of a new Cow Shelter that can house the growing numbers, and take care of these adorable animals in a better and healthier way.

We request all kind-hearted, like-minded individuals, corporates and philanthropists to donate liberally, to support us in this sacred endevour. Donations will help us in providing the following:

·       Cattle Feed

·       Preventive Medicine and Care

·       Closed shelter to protect the cows, calves & bulls from stray dogs and other wild creatures

The monthly expense to manage the above is approximately Rs.5000 (US$ 60) per cow. With the rapidly growing numbers of cattle, we find it extremely difficult to manage the expenses. Hence, please donate generously for this worthy cause.  All donations are exempt from IT under Section 80G.

Gho Matha is the abode of all Devathas. All gods reside in her. She is Goddess Mahalakshmi. On one hand, we worship cow as a deity. On the other hand, we send her for slaughter. This hypocrisy is a great blemish on all of us. Till such time we do not protect the cow well until it naturally passes away, we are unfit to call ourselves Hindus. Government, at best, can only pass rule against cow slaughter but it is up to all of us to take care of her well-being. Ishwara is watching every move of us. We are bound to offer at least a handful of grass to Gho Matha every day. There is NO greater Punniyam (meritorious deed) than doing Gho Dhanam or Gho Samrakshanam.

His Holiness Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava
