Poundarika Maha Soma Yagam

It is indeed an honor and privilege to share the news about one of the significant rituals “Poundarika MahaYagam” which is going to take place next month in Jan 2023 by a  nitya agnihotri family residing near Vijayawada. They have been ardent devotees of Moolamnaya Sarvajna Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya Peetham since the year 1950’s!

Shri Gurubhyoh namaha

To the karmakandin, the whole body of the vedas, presents the most valid and authoritative source of ritualistic literature. There is no doubt that our ancient rishis were imbued with a sense of veneration for the vedic injunctions as to karma. Of all such rituals, yagna stands out pre eminent.  The narayanopanishad, purushasukta, taittreya Sanhita, bhagavat gita all describe the greatness of performing yagnas. Among all the yagnas, soma yaga takes prominence and eleven of them contribute the Poundareekam mahayagam in which the rig, yajur, sama vedas are chanted completely. This is very special as all other yagnyas will use only a portion of the vedas. Various materials like copper, brass, gold, clay , wood etc are used in complex manners for making utensils, tools, as an offering etc in this.

With the blessing of Kanchi Kamakoti guru parampara, Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi, Sri Shankara Vijayendra Saraswati Mahaswamigal, Sri Dendukuri Brahmasri Lakshmi Narasimha Somayaaji will be performing this maha yagnam for the kalyanam for one and all. This yagnam will span for more than a month and we welcome every household to contribute whatever possible towards this noble cause as the punyam we reap from our small contribution will be so high.

This mahayagnam was probably done by a very few in the recent past. The rules for this yagnam are very hard and need to be followed throughout the 45 days without any break! – starting from

  • Vastram (Clothing)
  • Food
  • Sleep (not allowed to lie down)
  • Chanting

Among the 1.4 billion population in India, there are hardly hundred and sixty Nitya agnihothri’ s who have practiced this anusthanam earlier. Currently, the knowledge and expertise specific to Poundarika yagnam is with a handful of 20 people in the current times.
